The Development Status Of Circuit Breakers

The evolution of circuit breakers has progressed from simple structures to highly intelligent systems; the overarching trend is toward greater safety, enhanced reliability, reduced size, and expanded functionality.

Early circuit breakers were predominantly oil-based or air-based types. These devices featured relatively bulky structures, possessed limited arc-extinguishing capabilities, and required extensive maintenance. As the capacity of power systems continued to expand, such equipment increasingly struggled to meet the demands of high-voltage and high-current applications, leading to their gradual replacement by newer generations of circuit breakers.

Vacuum circuit breakers and SF₆ circuit breakers have since emerged as the industry's mainstream products. Among these, vacuum circuit breakers-distinguished by their superior arc-extinguishing performance, extended service life, and compact size-are widely deployed in medium-voltage systems. Conversely, SF₆ circuit breakers hold a pivotal position in the fields of high-voltage and ultra-high-voltage power transmission, distinguished by their robust insulation and fault-interrupting capabilities.

The development of circuit breakers is now advancing further in the direction of intelligence, integrating with smart grid systems to enable capabilities such as remote monitoring, fault diagnostics, and data analysis. Concurrently, driven by requirements for energy conservation and environmental protection, key industry development priorities now include minimizing the use of SF₆ gas and developing eco-friendly insulating media.
